Hi
There appears to be some controversy regarding whether Tagore composed the song in honour of the emperor or God.
According to Wikipedia, in a letter to Pulin Behari Sen, Tagore himself wrote:
"A certain high official in His Majesty's service, who was also my friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, I pronounced the victory in Jana Gana Mana of that Bhagya Vidhata [ed. God of Destiny] of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or any other George. Even my official friend understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for the crown was excessive, he was not lacking in simple common sense."
In view of his categorical assertion to the contrary, it would appear to be unfair to attribute the composition as a tribute to the emperor.

Enjoyed the story. I remember reading a similar story in one of Kenneth Anderson's books. But it was about a sadhu who supposedly turned into a tiger at night. However, the sadhu who was actually an impostor was killed by the tiger in the end.
Dear AS
A nice, tongue in cheek piece. Enjoyed reading it. But couldn't understand the title.
Are you a lawyer by any chance?

Dear S Gewali
First of all congratulations for compiling an excellent collection of thoughts on our ancient literature. Some of the authors quoted were really renowned in their fields.
But I am not able to understand why have you taken offence at Gopalkrishnan's comments? His question itself acknowledges the merits of our literature. But it is also true that our recent contribution to the world today is not much to boast of. Unless we acknowledge the truth how will we produce what our ancestors were able to produce?

Dear NL,
You may be interested in knowing that Jonathan Swift wrote the following in 1726 about lawyers in his book Gulliver's Travels:-
"I said there was a Society of Men among us, bred up from their Youth in the Art of proving by words multiplied for the Purpose, that White is Black and Black is White, according as they are paid. To this Society all the rest of the people are slaves."
